Diabetic Retinopathy

Early detection of diabetic changes in the retina of the eye are important to early intervention and preserving vision.  Diabetic patients should receive a comprehensive eye examination with a dilated assessment of the the retina yearly.  Maintaining normal blood sugar levels and regular health care is key to the prevention of all diabetic complications, including those affecting the eyes.

Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that affects the eyes. It occurs when the tiny blood vessels of the retina leak blood and other fluids. This causes the retinal tissue to swell, resulting in blurred vision.  If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness.
