Corneal Abrasions

Corneal abrasions are defined as surface scratches on the clear outer layer of the eye called the cornea.

Corneal Abrasions Are Painful

Corneal abrasions can be caused by trauma, such as being poked in the eye with a finger or rubbing foreign matter in the eyes. Another cause is wearing dirty contact lenses or getting debris trapped under contact lenses. Having a scratched cornea can be painful.  Symptoms may include pain, redness, blurred vision, an increased sensitivity to light, and excessive tearing.
